ALUMNI STORIES: MIKE HORAN

MIKE HORAN

A Sunny Hills High School graduate, Mike was a star punter on the Fullerton College football squad under Coach Hal Sherbeck for the 1978 and 1979 seasons. After graduating from FC, Mike transferred to Long Beach State and became one the 49er’s best weapons. The records show that he is still the best punter in CSULB history. Mike’s records include career average (42.9), seasonal average (44.9), and game average (49.5). He was inducted into the 49er Hall of Fame in 1994. Drafted by the Atlanta Falcons in the 9th round of the of the 1982 draft, Mike played with three teams before he caught on with the Philadelphia Eagles. He earned All-Rookie team honors.

Horan would be the Eagles punter for the next two seasons, until the Denver Broncos made him their starting punter (1986-1992). Mike stuck with the Broncos for 7 seasons, and was a integral part of three Broncos teams that went to the Super Bowl (‘86, ‘87, and ‘89).

Mike played for the New York Giants from 1993-1996 then for the St. Louis Rams in 1997. In 1998, Mike played for the Chicago Bears. In 1999, Mike played his final NFL season with the Rams where he won his first Super Bowl out of his stellar 16-year career. Mike’s other honors are 3 All-Pro Selections (’84, ’88, ‘90), 1 Pro Bowl Appearance (‘88), and 16 Career Playoff Games with five different teams.
